History was also made during the primary election. On June 28th, Misty Plowright won her race against Donald Martinez to become the Democratic candidate for U.S. House District 5, making her one of the nation’s first two openly transgender candidates to win a major-party congressional primary in U.S. history.
Now that the primary has wrapped up, college campuses are beginning their preparations for the 2016 general election. Much of the focus currently is on registering students to vote, but as the elections get closer, campuses will change gears and engage in different types of electoral engagement efforts. Campuses across the state are preparing to register their students at new student orientation and student move-ins. Others are focusing on registering students at club fairs and important fall events. Many campuses are partnering once again with New Era Colorado on voter registration, an incredible local nonpartisan nonprofit dedicated to engaging youth in our democracy. As it gets closer to the general election, campus staff, faculty, and students alike are eager to see what will happen in this 2016 general election.
