At the beginning the the school year, students have a million questions swirling around their heads. How am I going to pass all of these classes? Will I have to get a job to keep up with expenses? Will my job interfere with my grades? How will I manage my time and not get behind? Who will I meet this year? For many of them, the last thing on their mind at the start of this semester is “How do I register to vote?”
What can your school do to help students think about and answer this question, especially if staff members have plates that overflow with to-do lists and duties? The best strategy schools can use to help register voters is to empower students to talk with their peers about the importance of voting. Don’t just send an all-campus email, put students at voting registration tables where there is a lot of foot traffic. Help students create events that spotlights the issue important to them.
