Whoever says youth are disinterested and disengaged has not met these students. Passion, excitement, and encouragement flooded the campus as issues surrounding immigration, climate change, veteran’s affairs and more were discussed. Students from all ends of the political spectrum where represented and displayed that civility still exists in political dialogue. As I myself was among these students, I found it refreshing and encouraging, hearing fellow students’ debate and share their perspectives. I was empowered by my peers to return to my state and further the work I do with the Campus Election Engagement Project to help students vote.
There were many opportunities to engage in conversations amongst ourselves but with others as well. Filmmaker Julie Winokur, shared her film Bring It To The Table and held a discussion afterwards. Through hearing Julie speak and watching the film students shared in the importance of listening when engaging in political discussions. The film set the tone for the rest of our time together as we listened, understood, and responded.
